Top five tips for managing curly hair

Say goodbye to out of control frizz with our tips for perfect curls.

The queen of New York style Carrie Bradshaw made big hair glamourous on Sex and the City. But any girl with curls knows these ‘effortless’ glossy waves are about as stress free as organising a night out with 25 girlfriends. If you like wearing your hair curly and want your locks to look more ‘red carpet ready’ than ‘recently escaped mountain lion’, check out our top tips.

Get the right cut

When you visit your salon ask them to chop in long layers to make the hair manageable. Opt for shoulder length (or slightly longer) if you want something that’s easy to wash and style. If you’re going to choose a high maintenance cut like a pixie crop, bear in mind you will need to straighten it every day. Regular trims are particularly important for dry curly hair as it’s prone to split ends.

Choose organic colour

As curly hair is prone to frizz and dryness, you should avoid bleach when possible. Many salons offer organic dyes which are healthier for your hair and don’t have the same ‘stripping effect’ that peroxide does.

Condition and treat your hair

After washing, make sure you apply conditioner liberally and leave on for as long as possible. If your hair is curly it’s unlikely to get greasy quickly, so try to avoid washing it every day. You’ll also benefit from regular moisturising hair treatments, which can be purchased from your local salon. If you’re tight on cash opt for a homemade treatment made from mashed avocado and a spoonful of mayonnaise. (Just don’t confuse it with your lunch.)

Always use a heat protective styler

Dry hair is prone to heat damage so make sure you choose your hair dryer, curler and straighteners carefully. Try using the Braun Satin Hair 7 curler to create your perfect look. Offering advanced heat protection, the styling products are also equipped with IONTEC technology which restores shine and prevents frizz.
